From working with some models that are not as experience in front of a camera I find myself having to tell them to trust themselves and take what they are doing but “exaggerate it.”
I don’t know if this is the same for every photographer and how they shoot…but when the model make a choice…goes with it…and takes it that much further the photos is spot on!
Models: You know your body (I hope) and know of what would look good on camera (even if your wrong) try it. The worst that can happen it looks stupid and the photographer just doesn’t use it..if you don’t TRY, however, we will never know if it was a rad shot or not!
Then take what you started to do…and then do it to the next level…stick your head out that much more…shift your hips that much more…tug on your shirt that much more. It might feel odd or weird, but I bet it reads better on camera and creates that dynamic shot!
I just spent a wonderful weekend in Seattle seeing my friends! I took my camera down to the Seattle waterfront area with my friend Sherein I. and from the photos I took I am going to start a NEW project for myself. ”Portraits of Friends” I want to take photos of them being who they are…not head shots…not models…no crazy weird ideas…just my friends!
So enjoy!
My friend Sherein is one of the most kind humans you will ever meet. Through her I have learned so much about who I am and how to treat others around me.
It’s that kindness and passion for love that makes me adore her!
Thanks Sherein!
After spending the last few days talking to my elder co-workers…they have brought to my attention that our generation has a strong “Sense of Entitlement.” I did debate with all of them for a while about the issue but after reflecting over it for a few days, I have decided that its true…somewhat.
I don’t know if it’s really about entitlement as much as it is knowing that your being polite and how to approach other people. Let’s all remember that someone will only help you if your a kind person and also keep in mind that no one owes you anything.
I think a lot us in the “photography/modeling world” (me included) feel as though the ‘other’ person owes you this or that. This is far from true. Ask nicely…if you get turned down don’t get upset..I feel if you respond with grace and class you will be rewarded in the long run!
Now time to get ready for my photo shoot!
Hypothetical Situation: ”I just finished a shoot…spent hours and hours editing the photos…giving them the look I wanted and am rather happen with them. Next I send them to the model to only see the model had posted them…however the photos have been changed…the colors are different or now its in black and white…or the photos is changed to extremes!”
I don’t know what the rule is…but this makes me roll my eyes and is a situation I hate bringing up…if you want to re-edit my photos…ask…tell me what you are going to do to them and let me see them before you do it…it’s respect for my art…and if you do a poor job at it…everyone will think that I did it.
Have a good new year!
I had so much fun shooting yesterday with Kamyar J. I also had a wonderful Makeup Artist Kelli G. The shoot started with me going to New Space (A wonderful studio and gallery in South East Portland) I got there early and was told I could start any time I needed due to the fact no one was in the space. As soon as I started to set up the model and makeup artist got there and we started about 30 minutes early! I had told Kamyar that I wanted something that wasn’t ‘modely’ and he delivered from the start of the shoot taking my ideas and turning them into a reality! I love shooting anything, but this type of shoot is what keeps me going!
Always remember your ART!
One thing I have learned about working as a photographer in such a close knit city like Portland is to never talk bad about someone, it has bit me in the butt a few times. That being said, another thing I have come to learn is leave the ego at home, why…because its ugly! Models, Photographers, Makeup artists, and clothing designers…there is no need for you to be rude to anyone at anytime for any reason.
Models: The one thing that will make a Photographer never want to work with you again is if you show up to a shoot (paid or not) and treat the artistic team bad…I am sure the photographer will also rush the shoot in order to be done working with you!
Photographers: We work in this town together…why not just get along and be friends! You don’t have to tell me your secrets…and I wont tell you mine…There is also no need to be rude to the talent..lets be kind to our models and treat them with respect!
I have had the wonderful opportunity to work with one of the best photographers in this town! I have learned a lot about lighting, working with models/clients, post production, and being on set. However the most important thing I have learned from my internship is respect and being humble…if you know you rock…you don’t have to talk about it.
Happy shooting!
Working with new models can always be a bit of a challenge. They are stiff…they don’t know what to do with their hands…they also don’t know how to communicate to the photographer what they want or what ideas they might have floating around in their heads. I had the pleasure of working with three models this week all of which had only a hand full of shoots under their belts…for one of them it was her VERY first shoot. I was rather amazed though how each one got up and just did it…the reason why…I think it’s because all three of them listened. Key to a good shoot is listening…the model to the photographer and the photographer to the model…and its not always through words and hearing…it’s through actions!
Check out the photos from these three shoots!
Sometimes the best photo shoots are those with really no reason at all, sometimes you get the best results. One of my very first models ever Ashley S. posed for me a few nights ago! All I said was “I am bring over my lighting and camera, and lets shoot!” I shot only about 100 photos, which was all I needed. Sometimes you just need a reminder that a photo shoot doesn’t have to be a big ordeal or a huge undertaking…remember the passion and the fun of JUST shooting!
So it’s Thanksgiving weekend and I have a lot on my plate! Photography work is starting to build slow and shoots are starting to line up! I just finished a shoot with a new model to the area Evan F, he was just signed with Vault Model Management and I see big things for this guy! Please check my Fan Page on Facebook for more photos of him!
